Boat Scene

ca. 1915-1920

Odake Chikuha

Japanese, 1878 - 1936

Despite any apparent rainfall or water depicted in the scene, the viewer perceives that passengers on a boat were suddenly caught in a shower. The figure of a woman covering her ears with her hands implies the sound of thunder can be heard. At the dock, beautiful women are getting off the boat with help of boatmen, hurriedly crossing the pier with umbrellas up. Odake Chikuha (1878-1936), an excellent painter active in the early twentieth century, captured a variety of people and their activities and integrated them into a graceful scene, in the mood of the Edo period.
