The Twelve Months: March and April
Datefirst half 16th century
Label TextThis print is from a series of ten images devoted to seasonal peasant life, stemming from the traditional assumption that peasants were closer to nature's cycles. The modeling is cruder and harsher than in Beham's other work; close examination has revealed these prints to be extremely close copies of the originals, probably created shortly afterward to disseminate the popular imagery to a wider audience. Such copying was a common practice once the original plates wore out.
