early 20th century

Nishimura Goun

Japanese, 1877-1938

Although the parrot is not native to Japan, it was imported into that country for the enjoyment of the Imperial family, from as early as the 9th century. The bird was hardly more prevalent in the Edo period, but its display at various entertainment stalls made it slightly less exotic. Perhaps it was at one of these street stalls, or even at the Kyoto Zoo which opened in 1903, that Goun first encountered his lively and colorful subject.
