Maker Ghada Amer Egyptian (works in America), born 1963
Label TextSexuality and its many forms of expression is a theme that Amer has used to unmask issues of politics, religion, and contrasting, if not conflicting, social mores between the cultures of East and West. The Egyptian-born artist mixes conventions borrowed from Abstract Expressionism with hand embroidery and explicit imagery generated in the media to challenge notions of propriety, pleasure, and ownership of the female form.
