Op art of the 1960s-particularly paintings by Jesus Rafael Soto and Ludwig Wilding- provoked Jeffrey Simmons to consider moiré patterning. He remembers looking over a children's book of moiré patterns that featured printed plastic overlays to explore optical shifts. Another reference he makes is to "the carefully painted patterns suggesting watered silks worn by sitters throughout the history of European portraiture." This painting is named after Saint Agilus, whose feast day corresponds to the day the artist completed it.
