Still Life with Fruit and Vegetables, after Juan Sanches Cotan

Still Life with Fruit and Vegetables, after Juan Sanches Cotan

2004

Vik Muniz

American, born 1961

Vik Muniz’s ingenuity lies in his unconventional use of materials, from paper chad to peanut butter and jelly to diamonds. Through meticulous staging and skill, he reinvents classical masterpieces, adding a contemporary twist that challenges traditional notions of artistry. Muniz not only pays homage to the European canon but also sparks conversations about the fluidity of artistic expression. Here, Muniz has created a photo that is a faithful copy of a 17th-century Spanish still life.
