Label TextBorn in Germany, Ernst was the co-founder of the Cologne Dada group in 1919 before moving to Paris in 1922. He became a major proponent of Surrealism and used experimental techniques and fantastic imagery that helped to define the movement. This work was made late in his career and incorporates found objects, which held a prominent place in Surrealist practice.
