Frantisek Kupka

Czech, active in France, 1871 - 1957

Mysticism, spiritualism and theosophy—often combined with new scientific research into space and time—were influential topics in the first two decades of the 20th century.
Combined with an interest in color studies and music, they informed the painting of Kupka, who hoped to create subjective renderings of cosmic space through abstract color and form. “I can find something between sight and hearing and I can produce a fugue in colors as Bach has done in music.”
