Adoration of the Shepherds

Adoration of the Shepherds

ca. 1600-20

Experts are confounded by this painting. Its combination of Italian and Flemish features reminds us that artists and works of art traveled back and forth across the Alps, sharing and blending motifs and techniques. The copper panel bears the mark of an Antwerp panel maker who supplied panels to artists in many parts of Europe. The painting has a fine Italian cassetta frame.
