Yoon Kwang-cho

Korean, born 1946

This expressive piece was made shortly after Yoon Kwang-cho began his personal exploration of Son (Zen) Buddhism. The artist entered a Son temple in Korea for two months, a seminal experience which motivated him to leave behind old methods and seek a more carefree style. His work began to take on a rougher, less refined character, as he incorporated sand into the clay and used bamboo knives, as well as his fingernails and thumbprints, to add texture. Yoon's significant contribution to Korean art merited an award for Artist the Year 2004 as well as an exhibition at the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea.
