Chikuunsai IV (Takeo Tanabe)

Japanese, born 1973

This dynamic bamboo sculpture was made by Takeo Tanabe (born 1973), the fourth generation of a traditional basket-maker's family named Chikuunsai (literally, "bamboo-cloud"). Pursuing an abstract beauty in bamboo objects, his work expresses the strength and unity of his family tie. The intact surface of the bamboo shows the unique texture and patterns of the kurochiku type of bamboo.
