Chang Ch'ung-ho Frankel

Chinese, 1913 - 2015

Being most famous for her small regular script, in this representative piece Chang Ch'ung-ho displays her ability to create subtle variations in a single work. Since the characters are small, she deliberately breaks up the uniformity of the writing with slight modifications in the size of the characters and spacing between each character. In addition, she varies her style of writing. For example, in the first poem, the characters are rectilinear and thin, while in the second poem, the characters are wider and more square, with pronounced diagonal strokes and flatter ends that angle upwards. As such, she reinvigorated and animated an intimate writing script to be appreciated from a public viewing vantage point.
