In East Asian art, the peony-"the king of flowers"-is frequently paired with the mythical phoenix, the "king of birds," in a highly auspicious design that promises blessings and prosperity. The motif of phoenix and dragon, as seen on the pair of Imari vases, is an emblem of weddings and augurs marital harmony.
