George Tsutakawa

born 1910, Seattle, Washington; died 1997 Seattle

Tsutakawa made this work in 1981, the same year that the Emperor of Japan presented him with the Order of the Rising Sun Award, Fourth Class. Through all his years of creating large-scale fountains and abstract sculptures, Tsutakawa continued to paint small, unpretentious pictures in sumi ink and watercolor.
