Tea bowl ("Fuji")

1811-34

Ryonyu (Raku IX)

Japanese, 1756 - 1834

The family lineage of a tea bowl maker called Raku originated in the late 16th century. A special pottery created primarily in black or red colors, Raku ware is formed by hand and fired at a low temperature. The unglazed section on this bowl resembles the shape of Mount Fuji, as the artist's title suggests.
