Chi Soon-taek

Korean, 1912-1993

Trained under Yanagi Soetsu, the founder of the Japanese folk craft movement, Korean potter Chi Soon-taek recognized the beauty of his country's traditional wares and sought to perpetuate the spirit of Korea's much-lauded ceramic culture, recreating Koryo celadons as well as Choson white porcelain and punch'ong ware. The seemingly unaffected character of the jar-from the freely painted floral design to the thickly applied glaze-belies the artist's decades of technical training and self-discipline.
