Label TextThese six paintings are from an installation that the Los Angeles-based artist Chris Lipomi installed at Art Basel Miami in December 2006. Comprised of various mask imagery-African to comic book hero-the oil on mirror works are intended to be interactive, with the viewer able to "try on" these disguises. The work is also part of a broader series of recent sculptures, paintings, and installations that investigate the intersections of non-Western artforms and decoration that coopts them. Thus, there is an element of a bad interior design scheme gone wrong in some of Lipomi's works, while there is also an acknowledgment of the power of fantasies surrounding the "exotic."
