Caspar David Friedrich, the ultimate German romantic painter, is cited by this artist as her main source of inspiration, and The Large Enclosure as one of her favorite paintings by him. In her studio, Livingston constructs enclosures of branches, string and wood, and then paints the "grid of architecture" that results. As she states, "These hybrid structures-with both natural and built forms-become the model for my paintings…Translating this information into paint results in a line that is specific and schematic at the same time."
