Kim Yik-yung was a student of Bernard Leach, an English potter who became a close associate of Yanagi Soetsu and a leading figure in the Mingei movement as it spread outside of Japan. Kim Yik-yung is interested in blurring the distinctions between utility and fine arts. These works indicate an affiliation with Mingei ideals of simplicity, reliance on natural materials, and utility, but they also highlight elements of contemporary design and aesthetics that depart from the early 20th-century Mingei examples. The intentionally rough surface is a result of chisel and hammer work.
