Smoke and Mirrors #200

Date2006
Maker Eileen Quinlan American, born 1972
Label TextNew York-based Quinlan's photographs are never manipulated by digital technology; instead they are staged in a darkroom using "common tricks of the trade": mirrors, strobe lights, and smoke. At once highly objective-documenting exactly what the camera sees-and subjective, her work builds illusions, a false sense of depth, and achieves unnatural colors through use of the fertile compositional tool of overlapping panes of glass.
