Mark Henderson

First Nations, Kwakwaka'wakw, born 1953

Henderson has been an active participant in the Cowichan Valley art scene; he created this poster for an exhibition of Native and non-Native printmakers. He was taught traditional Kwakwaka'wakw legends, songs and dances and learned carving from his father, Chief Sam Henderson. Although he has restored totem poles and recently painted a house front for the Big House in Campbell River, his main medium is acrylic painting, from which he creates limited edition silkscreen prints. His innovative style is influenced by earlier masters-Willie Seaweed, Mungo Martin and Henry Speck-and is characterized by complex compositions and subtle brown tonalities.
