Lingering Snow on Mount Hira (Hira no bosetsu), from the series Eight Views of Omi (Omi hakkei no uchi)
Dateca. 1834-35
Label TextLingering Snow on Mount Hira shows a Chinese sensibility in the towering mountains printed in monochromatic colors, but the distant view over the jewel-toned lake adopts pictorial conventions from the Western landscape tradition. Hiroshige clearly defined the nearer mountains with jutting strokes of black and gray, then left a section of the white paper unprinted to highlight the farthest peak.
