Imari bottle-shaped vase

18th century

A four-clawed dragon and a phoenix flanking a flaming jewel are enclosed within two quatrefoil medallions on this polychrome vase, as scrolling peonies and inverted lotus blossoms vie for any remaining space. Despite the six-character reign mark of Emperor Wan Li, this vase is almost certainly a Japanese copy of a Ming Chinese model.
