Female figure
Date20th century
Label TextInventive anatomy transforms this figure’s arms into what looks more like a necklace. Among the Lobi, anyone could carve a sculpture for a deity, or thil, who was waiting to assist a family. Most figures have faces set in determination to protect the families in their midst, and were once placed into shrine rooms where statues awaited invocations to provide counseling.
