Horned mask
Date20th century
Label TextBobo viewers derive great comfort or pleasure from the appearance of masqueraders who arrive to reestablish the world order put in place by Wuro, the creator. At a funeral, dozens of masked performers may appear at strategic times to act as a “shadow men” or doubles to help deceased persons on their journey to the next world. At other times, they surface to offer initiatory teachings to young novices learning layers of myth, history, and the ways to conduct orderly village life. Most masks display a clever merging of human and animal traits, with a coating of strident geometric shapes akin to magical amulets.
