Maker Lynette Yiadom-Boakye British, 1977
Label TextLynette Yiadom-Boakye’s images of people are not exactly portraits. Instead of using a model, she draws from her imagination and memories of people she sees on the subway, in magazines, or elsewhere. Appearing in ordinary or indistinct settings, these fictitious figures are somewhat mysterious and invite our curiosity. The powerful spontaneity and intensity of this image spring from the artist’s practice of completing each painting in a single day.
