Suns and Moons and Darkness

1979

Raymond Saunders

American, born 1934

"People usually want to be more informed about art than they need to be. It doesn't take an educated person to know, to feel, and to be an appreciator. And then you sort of eliminate that whole superficiality of giving credit where no credit is due.
INSTEAD OF IMITATING THE WORLD, YOU TAKE THE WORLD." (Raymond Saunders)

Raymond Saunders has spoken out against art categories and definitions and has written pamphlets and manifestos, starting with "Black is a Color", issued in 1968. His collages combine media, drawings, textures and bits of everyday life in ways that reinforce his respect for the merging of fantasy and reality.
