Vibha Galhotra begins with the tiniest element: a ghungroo, a bell strung with others to make the musical anklets used in many of India’s classical dance traditions. To fabricate her compositions, Galhotra works with women in her adopted city of New Delhi who have few opportunities to make money outside the confines of their homes. But Galhotra’s textured, multitonal, and swirling compositions are anything but claustrophobic. Each replicates a satellite image of a specific hurricane or typhoon (with the title referencing the strength of the storm). Using ghungroos, Galhotra magnifies the insignificant and the local to emphasize how mass urbanization and unchecked climate change engulf us all.
