Rind (Flood Route)

Date2003
Maker John Grade American, born 1970
Label TextGrade produces large-scale works that derive from observations of natural phenomena and that probe natural processes to help others see them in new ways. Rind (Flood Route) grew out of a residency at the Kohler Arts Center and Foundry in Wisconsin, where he collaborated with other artists in industrial metal fabrication to produce a series of smaller sculptures. Grade began moving beyond considerations of landscape towards a deeper exploration of materiality. X-ray images of the cast works produced ghostly images with bulging, organic forms. Such forms inspired Rind, with its surface contusions recalling the deep cuts in the earth created by cataclysmic floods.
