Raven Releasing the Sun

DateNovember 1985
Maker George Hunt Jr. First Nations, Kwakwaka'wakw, born 1958
Label TextRaven bringing light to the world—one of the most ubiquitous images in Northwest Coast Art—reveals Raven’s dual character as a trickster and a benefactor. Hunt, who comes from a rich heritage of artists, including Mungo Martin, depicts Raven immediately after releasing the sun from the box where it was kept by a chief. The work’s intricate composition and three-dimensional illusion demonstrates Hunt’s innovative and dramatic graphic style, which is also seen in his carvings, metal works, drums, and dance regalia.
