Raven Releasing the Sun
November 1985
Raven bringing light to the world—one of the most ubiquitous images in Northwest Coast Art—reveals Raven’s dual character as a trickster and a benefactor. Hunt, who comes from a rich heritage of artists, including Mungo Martin, depicts Raven immediately after releasing the sun from the box where it was kept by a chief. The work’s intricate composition and three-dimensional illusion demonstrates Hunt’s innovative and dramatic graphic style, which is also seen in his carvings, metal works, drums, and dance regalia.
