Robert Davidson

First Nations, Haida, born 1946

Robert Davidson, one of Canada’s most respected artists, received the Order of British Columbia in 1996. World-renowned for his totem poles and masks that depict Haida mythic beings, he is regarded as a master in carving, printmaking, and jewelry. His early print designs, such as this one, show his impeccable handling of formline design, a traditional system that he helped reestablish in Haida art after many generations of suppression. Davidson was the subject of a solo exhibition organized by SAM in 2013, a show that traveled to the National Museum of the American Indian.
