Quietly Floating: Blue #8

2008-2009

Pinaree Sanpitak

Thai, born 1961

Sanpitak has worked with breast imagery since the birth of her son in 1993. The form here is primarily abstract, with some realistic attributes, such as its pointed profile and pillowy soft shape. Its physicality is a dense symbol that encourages us to understand how women move in the world, to meditate on the shape’s similarities to Buddhist architecture (such as stupas), and to think about the expanding horizons of femininity. Above, three floating shapes are playfully wistful, signaling the nourishing potential of both rain clouds and breasts.
