Horie Togen

Japanese, 1606 - 1693

Horie Togen was a noted poet and calligrapher in 17th-century Japan. On this scroll, Horie brushed a poem, probably composed by himself, in his fluid calligraphy style. The painting—leaves and vines—were most likely done by another hand, but the painter has not been unidentified. Nevertheless, the interplay between the image and the text creates a delightful result.
