early 20th century
Yun Yong-gu was a high-ranking official in the court of the Joseon dynasty (1392–1910). After the Japanese annexation in 1910, Yun lived a seclusive life in the mountains as a protest, painting bamboo, orchids, rocks, and landscape that signal his resilience as a scholar-gentleman.
