Shigaraki Jar

Date2012
Maker Tsujimura Shirō Japanese, born 1947
Label TextSelf-taught artist Tsujimura Shirō has devoted his life to the study of pottery styles in late medieval Japan (14th–16th centuries). He has particularly been inspired by the dynamic, ash-glazed wares of Iga and Shigaraki, medieval centers of pottery production not far from Tsujimura’s home. This powerful work reflects his sophisticated understanding of the random nature of the kiln. Inspired by useful medieval objects like those displayed nearby, Tsujimura uses the surface of his jars to paint pictures from rough Shigaraki clay, fire, and ash.
