Hamada Shoji

Japanese, 1894-1978

This piece exemplifies Hamada Shoji’s approach to ceramics, manifested particularly in the white glaze that drips slightly from the band that surrounds the upper circumference of the jar. The piece evokes simplicity and naturalness. We do know the artist, but the artist left the jar unsigned, speaking to the “unknown craftsman” in the Mingei philosophy.
