Vase with herons

Dateearly 20th century
Label TextDuring the Meiji period, Japanese cloisonné craftsmen competed to enter their work at expositions in Europe and America, trying to extend their markets overseas. This movement turned cloisonné wear-multicolor enamels separated by silver wires and various other techniques they invented-into the most minute art form. Picturesque motifs in the Japanese style, such as this scene of herons in water, were especially popular, supported by fine ornamentation, as in this example of patterns encircling the top and bottom of the vase.
