Seattle Water Front

Born Saline, Michigan, 1853; died Saint Paul, Minnesota, 1921

Photography was an indispensable medium to aid the exploration-era scientists and entrepreneurs who came west after the Civil War. Haynes worked as photographer for the Northern Pacific Railroad, Yellowstone National Park, and for the Puget Sound and Alaska Steamship Company. From 1885-1905 his mobile "Haynes' Palace Studio Car" operated along the railroad lines, attesting to the demand for photographic images that promoted the quality of life in the Pacific Northwest.
