Kakiemon bowl in fluted shape of open chrysanthemum flower
late 17th century
The alternating motifs of sixteen-petalled chrysanthemum and paulownia crests inside this elegant bowl are auspicious for their associations with the Japanese Imperial family. The phoenix, with its dramatically curved tail feathers, carries imperial associations as well, while the plum and bamboo on the bowl's exterior are symbols of forbearance.
