Reliquary casket

ca. 1200 - 1225

Relics of Early Christian martyrs, the apostles, the Virgin Mary and even Christ himself, were venerated as sacred objects. This reliquary follows the traditional sarcophagus shape of funerary art, and is decorated with six standing saints on the front and one at each end.
