Game Bird; Hunting scene

Game Bird; Hunting scene

17th century

A guineafowl is depicted in side profile in a documentary manner. Its plumage and spots are painted with much care and precision. A small hill is provided to refer to the guineafowl’s natural habitat. Overall, the scene is parred down with minimal background details to better emphasize the bird’s physical features. Throughout the 17th century in South Asia, Mughal rulers enjoyed depictions of birds from elsewhere and within their empire, underscoring the range of objects and animals arriving from overseas and the myriad of domestic species.
