Walking Buddha

Dateca. 1350-1500
Maker Thai
Label TextThis votive plaque depicts the historical Buddha Shakyamuni in mid-stride with his left hand raised in a gesture of reassurance. Following his enlightenment, Buddha wandered through ancient India teaching and bringing together a group of followers. Theravada Buddhism, the form of Buddhism practiced in Thailand and some other parts of Southeast Asia, focuses on the life of historical Buddha. It does not include an elaborate pantheon of Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and deities like many other types of Buddhism.
