Evening on Rainier

Evening on Rainier

1904

Edward S. Curtis

American, 1868-1952

Before dedicating himself to the photography of Native Americans, Curtis earned a reputation and income from landscape photography. Mount Rainier-- "beloved mountain of mountains"--became his favorite subject. Curtis became an expert climber and spent many nights camped on the mountain slopes with his gear and heavy Premo dry-plate camera. This thoughtfully composed picture captures the shadowy mountain in all of its rugged grandeur.
