Landscape with Solitary Scholar

Landscape with Solitary Scholar

Dateca. 1810
Label TextPaired side-by-side with the work of his father Beisanjin, this hanging scroll reveals the far more subdued, restrained style of Hanko. Although the two paintings share the motif of the solitary scholar amidst rugged mountains, the brushwork in Hanko's landscape is crisper, more delicate. Compare the swirling eddies of water in the father's work to the placid stream in his son's.
