The concept was originated during the Han Dynasty, and became widely used in tombs during the Sui and Tang periods. This group of figures is dressed in official robes, their arms folded in a standard gesture that signifies serving in the court. Based on careful observation, the animal heads are depicted vividly, with their features highlighted. The figures, as they appear sequentially in the cycle, are rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog and pig, but one animal is missing—can you guess which it is? (Hint: no ears.)
