Small pipe (xahliidaa.u)

ca. 1820

Pipes were among the first objects carved by Haida in argillite. beginning around 1820, and were sold to visiting Euro-American fur traders who came to their islands in sailing ships. Early pipes show evidence of being smoked while later, larger pipes were probably not put to practical use. Before European contact Northwest Coast natives grew a unique species of tobacco which they chewed with pulverized lime.
