Morris Graves

Date1950
Maker Imogen Cunningham American, 1883-1976
Label TextDuring the 1950s, Cunningham photographed a number of artists, poets, and writers both on the West and East Coasts. In this psychologically penetrating portrait of Northwest artist Morris Graves, she had spent a day with him on his private property located outside of Seattle, and produced this deeply introspective image. Over three decades, Cunningham would return to this subject, photographing him on a number of occasions and creating works of great intensity, calm, and solitude, as expressed in the adjacent portrait of Graves in his garden.
