18th century

In pre-modern Japan, the daughters of wealthy feudal lords were sent off into marriage with elaborate wedding trousseau, or konrei chodo. In addition to fine lacquer objects, bridal trousseaus also included luxury objects such as gold screens and bedding, which porters would carry in a long procession as the bride traveled to her new home.
