Sachet or insect cage with lid

Sachet or insect cage with lid

ca. 1850

Framed by lacquered bamboo and wood, the top and four sides of this container are decoratively latticed, and a thin fabric lines the inside. As it catches the light, gold threads woven into the fabric in arabesque patterns shine with brilliance through the lattice. Even without knowing the precise period and province of origin, it is easy to imagine that this elaborate box was the cherished possession of a lady of high social status.
